An Insight into the Leopard (Panther) by the Bamileke People of Cameroon, Africa (Excerpt of "The Usurper:and Other Stories)

When I asked him why our people held the panther—so often called the leopard—as our totem, his answer opened another door in my understanding.

“Why are you still puzzled by the leopard, that wisest of wild cats?” he asked, eyes bright with ancestral knowing. “You cannot truly see it unless you carry the soul of this land. The leopard is our pride, our mirror in the wild. Look at its dignity, its quiet power. Understand the leopard, and you understand what it means to survive in this world.

“People wonder why it is so defensive, caring, agile, sly, elusive, solitary, and yet fiercely aggressive when it needs to. It became this way because for thousands of years it was hunted by man and beast alike. It learned to endure...
