When I asked him why our people held the panther—so often
called the leopard—as our totem, his answer opened another door in my
understanding.
“Why are you still puzzled by the leopard, that wisest of
wild cats?” he asked, eyes bright with ancestral knowing. “You cannot truly see
it unless you carry the soul of this land. The leopard is our pride, our mirror
in the wild. Look at its dignity, its quiet power. Understand the leopard, and
you understand what it means to survive in this world.
