The "Ndap" (Ndab) or name of respect in the Bamileke and Grassfields cultures of Cameroon

In Bamileke and Grassfields cultures of Cameroon, a name of respect is called a ndap. It is a traditional eulogy or praise name used to show reverence. Instead of calling elders or respected individuals by their given names, community members use this name to honor their family history and social status.

These respectful titles change depending on the person's lineage and rank in society. Bamileke naming customs are rooted in profound respect and tradition:
  • The Meaning of "Ndap": Originating in several dialects (such as Medumba), the ndap acts as a eulogy, lineage marker, or praise name. It is often assigned at birth or adulthood to preserve the history and originality of a family.
  • Naming Taboos: In Bamileke society, referring to an adult by their literal first name is generally avoided in public due to strict cultural norms regarding respect and kinship. Instead, their ndap is used.
  • The "Fon": The supreme leader of a Bamileke chiefdom (fondom) is the Fon. He is considered the spiritual and political father of the chiefdom and is shown immense deference.
  • For Kings (Fons): Specific ndap titles are bestowed alongside their nobility, such as Mbelon, Ndê'la, or Ze.
  • For Notables/Dignitaries: Titles of notability are used, such as Mennkam-Cuabèn or Nzîtamfèn-Ndè.
  • For Parents of Twins: Parents of twins are highly respected and are often referred to respectfully as Tanyi (father of twins) or Manyi (mother of twins).
  • Other Titles of Respect: You will frequently hear terms like Mafo (Queen Mother or highly influential female notable) or Kam (a title that frequently indicates leadership, high status, or power).
The ndap is incredibly important to Bamileke genealogy, as it immediately identifies a person's family origins and briefly tells their lineage's history.
