Key Settlements and Stations Founded by the Baptists, before German Colonization of “Kamerun”, where Pidgin English thrived or was the lingua franca
- Fernando
Po (Bioko Island) — 1843/1842: Early British Baptist work began under John
Clarke and G. K. Prince, joined by Saker in 1843, supporting liberated
African slaves at Clarence (later Santa Isabel/Malabo). Protestant worship
was later banned by Spanish authorities here in 1858, prompting the
relocation to the mainland.
- Bimbia
(Jubilee Mission) — 1844: Founded initially on the mainland by Jamaican
Baptist missionary Joseph Merrick. Saker worked closely alongside this
foundational mainland effort upon his arrival in the region.
- Bethel
Station (Cameroons/Douala) — 1845: Saker established this primary mission station on
the mainland bank of the Cameroons (Wouri) River among the Duala people,
forming a local church here in 1849.
- Victoria
(Amboises Bay) — 1858: Saker purchased coastal land from local Bimbia
chiefs and founded the free settlement of Victoria (renamed Limbe
in 1982) as a refuge for expelled Baptists and freed slaves from Fernando
Po.
